Why We Built CommunityRanker

Finding the right community can be life-changing. There is no reliable index of online communities on the web. So we built one.

The right community changes everything

Some of the most important turning points in people’s careers and lives happen because they found the right group of people at the right time. A founder joins an online community and meets their co-founder. A designer gets their first freelance client through a Discord server. A fitness enthusiast finds accountability partners who help them transform their health.

Communities are where knowledge is shared, relationships are formed, and opportunities surface. They are arguably the most underrated resource on the internet.

The problem: there is no community index

Try finding “the best online community for startup founders” or “the most active design community” right now. You will get a mix of outdated blog posts, Reddit threads from three years ago, affiliate-loaded listicles, and forum posts that list communities which no longer exist.

There is no single, reliable, comprehensive directory of online communities. No place where you can browse by category, compare platforms, read verified data about engagement and size, and discover communities you never knew existed.

This is the gap we are filling.

What CommunityRanker is

CommunityRanker is a free, open directory and ranking engine for online communities across every major category — from startups and fitness to crypto, gaming, design, and beyond.

We index communities across all platforms — Discord servers, Slack workspaces, Reddit communities, Circle groups, forums, Telegram channels, and custom-built platforms. For each community, we surface the data that actually matters: how active it is, how accessible it is, what platform it runs on, and how long it has been around.

Our rankings are algorithmic and transparent. We do not accept payment for placement. Community operators can claim their listing to verify and update their data, but they cannot buy a higher rank. Our full methodology is published and available for anyone to review.

What we believe

Discovery should be free. Finding the right community should not require digging through affiliate-laden blog posts or paying for access to a directory.

Data should be transparent. Every ranking on CommunityRanker is computed from observable data using a published formula. If a data point cannot be verified, we show that it is unavailable rather than guessing.

Communities deserve visibility. Many incredible communities struggle with discovery because they exist on platforms without native search or SEO. We make them findable.

For community seekers

Browse our categories, search by topic or platform, and find communities that match what you are looking for. Every listing links directly to the community so you can join.

For community builders

Submit your community to our directory for free. Claim your listing to verify your data and keep it up to date. The more accurate your listing, the more discoverable your community becomes.

CommunityRanker is built and maintained as an independent project. We have no venture funding, no paywall, and no sponsored listings. Just a simple goal: help people find communities that matter.
